Eco-Tourism in Keningau

Bandukan Recreational Park

Tucked away 15 km away from the town of Keningau, is Bandukan Recreational Park. It serves as an ideal place to enjoy a picnic with family and friends. This is one of the best places for a weekend getaway in Keningau by yourself or with family and friends. This park is also one of the popular for its fishing competitions in Sabah. Its charming environment, away from the hustle and bustle of the city's atmosphere, has become a public attraction element.

Manis Manis Rooftop of Borneo Resort

Located in the heart of Crocker Range Park, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, the Manis Manis Rooftop of Borneo Resort is a gateway to the secret natural wonders of the Sabah rainforest. You’ll be able to see Rafflesia -the world’s biggest flower, fern, orchid, jungle vines and lianas when you trek the jungle. If you're really lucky, you could encounter a slow Loris, a sambar deer, or even a cloudy leopard! The property is the perfect place for recreation, jungle trekking, hiking, nature education and meeting.

Crocker Range National Park

Crocker Range National Park occupies 1,399 km2, making it the biggest park in Sabah. The park consists of a hilly and lush landscape, with several species of flora and fauna endemic in Borneo. As a major biodiversity site, the park also plays an important role as a water catchment area as a source of 12 major rivers across Sabah. These rivers provide safe drinking water on the western coast and inland of Sabah. The park includes at least five species of primates, such as orang-utans, gibbons, hairy tarsiers and sociable long-tailed macaques.

Mount Trusmadi

Standing proudly at 2,642 metres high, Mount Trusmadi is the second-highest mountain in Malaysia after Mount Kinabalu. It is located approximately 70 kilometres southeast of Kota Kinabalu City. The peak is situated in the Trusmadi Forest Reserve, which is bordered by three districts-Ranau on the north, Tambunan on the west and Keningau on the south. Mount Trusmadi proves to be a destination worth discovering and a climb that is considered important to triumph over. Hiking through Mount Trusmadi starts with a simple boardwalk at the beginning with some stairs on the way to the rest house where the climbers stay overnight. It is said, however, to give its climbers a tougher challenge compared to Mount Kinabalu.

Matanoi Hill

Manatoi Hill is located in Apin-Apin, about 15 kilometres from Keningau town. The height of this hill is about 200-300 meter with moderate steepness. There is a birds nest that can be seen as the number one attraction on the hill. The duration of the hike is up to 20 minutes, depending on one's stamina. For those who are not keen to hike, you can enjoy playing with rabbits. For those who are not interested in hiking, you can enjoy playing with rabbits, as there is a small rabbit farm near the entrance to Matanoi Hill. The best time to visit is normally during the weekdays since you can expect the place to be packed with other locals during the weekend.

Trig Hill (Bukit Trig)

Bukit Trig is situated in Apin-Apin Keningau, 20.2 kilometres from the town of Keningau. This hill is renowned for its beauty, and there are a lot of people walking around here. Upon arrival, it is recommended that travellers fill in their data at the registration booth as the data is collected for tourism purposes. There are a total of 6 checkpoints and it is recommended that travellers carry their caps along and wear appropriate shirts and sport suits. Interestingly, travellers can enjoy the view of the Apin-Apin city, and if the weather is fine, they can even see Mount Trusmadi. Bukit Trig Keningau, promises a fantastic experience for you, whether your choice of a standard route or a difficult route is sure to be exciting. Beautiful views along the route adorned with the elegance of flora and fauna will leave you fascinated and astounded.

Laing Cave

Located about 30 minutes from Keningau town, Laing Cave is situated at the village of Lipasu in Bingkor. Upon arrival, travellers need to use four-wheel-drive vehicles in view of the hilly surface of the road to the cave path. Then, walk for about 30-40 minutes to reach the cave; the path to the cave is quite challenging with a slick rocky surface that will certainly test the skills and patience of travellers. Explore the cave and enjoy the flora and fauna along the journey. If you’re lucky, you will see Rafflesia Keithii, a unique type of flower in the lowland areas. Rafflesia takes about 9 months to bloom and withers in four to five days. The flower was named after the former forest conservator in North Borneo, Henry George Keith.
